Once a potion of Roxbury, Jamaica Plain or “JP” today is a 4.4 square mile neighborhood of the western part of Boston that is home to a large part of the Emerald Necklace parks. One of the most popular park destinations is the Arnold Arboretum, a great place to take a stroll on a weekend or enjoy an outdoor picnic.
JP officially became a part of Boston in late 1800’s and then growth began to happen. With the expansion was the introduction of triple decker homes that began to line many of the streets. The Stony Brook valley was once the epicenter of much industry for the area. Breweries benefitted from the Stony Brook aquifer and a once large German population in the area. Today the value of the brook is more of a memory and we are reminded of it by the naming of a T stop – Stony Brook Station. The new major artery in town is Center Street. This main thoroughfare runs through the diverse neighborhood offering countless family owned businesses from shops to restaurants and bars.
