Scituate is located in Plymouth County on the South Shore of Massachusetts. The name Scituate derives from a Wompanoag word “Satuit” meaning cold brook, which is a nod to the brook that runs to the inner harbor. Because of its coastal location, fishing played a large part of the local industry with much influence on the town. Today, fishing fleets are few and far between in the area as the town is now primarily a residential community.
Popular landmarks include the lighthouse on the northern edge of Scituate Harbor knows as “Old Scituate Light” as well as a second lighthouse named “Minot Ledge’s Light” located one mile off Scituate Neck.
Today, the town is popular among those looking for a quaint residential, coastal neighborhood. Many of the year round residents include families as well as retirees looking to live close to Boston. In addition, the area has become popular to city dwellers in search of second homes for quick getaways to a peaceful location.
